The two approaches
- On-site backup stores copies of your data on a device in your own location — an external drive, a NAS, or a local backup server. It's fast and fully under your control.
- Cloud backup stores copies in a secure, off-site data centre, accessed over the internet. It's off-premises and resilient to local disasters.
Each has real strengths — and real weaknesses on its own.
On-site backup: fast, but vulnerable
Strengths: Restoring from a local backup is fast — you're not limited by internet speed — and you keep full control of your data.
Weaknesses: It's in the same building as your live systems. A fire, flood, theft, or a ransomware attack that spreads across your network can take out your backup along with everything else. A backup that dies with your server isn't much of a safety net.
Cloud backup: resilient, but dependent on connection
Strengths: Because it's off-site, cloud backup survives local disasters — fire, flood, and ransomware that hits your network. It's typically automatic, encrypted, and easy to scale.
Weaknesses: Restoring large amounts of data depends on your internet connection, so a full recovery can take longer than from a local copy.
Why the best answer is usually both
This is where the well-known 3-2-1 rule comes in: keep 3 copies of your data, on 2 different types of media, with 1 copy off-site. In practice, for most Alberta businesses that means:
- Your live data (copy 1),
- An on-site backup for fast, everyday recovery (copy 2),
- A cloud backup for off-site protection against disaster and ransomware (copy 3, off-site).
Together they cover each other's weaknesses: fast local restores for the common stuff, and a resilient off-site copy for the worst case.
